Experience in China and the possibility of a future war with the Soviet Union resulted in an improved tankette design in 1937, the Type 97 Te-Ke, which could be armed either with a machine-gun or a 37mm gun. A little over 600 of these vehicles were produced. They were designed to use their mobility to scout enemy positions, not engage other enemy tanks.
