In Tunisia the British recognised a need for heavy support for recon units when entering defiles and other concealing terrain. It was decided to adopt the US designed M3 75mm GMC, a self-propelled 75mm gun mounted on a half-track. After arrangements for some under the lend-lease program were completed, the British planned for them to be deployed in Tunisia. However, due to delays, they were too late for their intended use. They were issued to the Heavy Troop of each Squadron and used until the end of the war. They were used as heavy support in Armoured Squadrons and first saw action in Italy lending their heavy fire to the armoured cars, their mobility meant it can re-deploy quickly and continue firing.
