The F-4 Phantom served as the principal air superiority fighter for the United States Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps and became important in the ground-attack and aerial reconnaissance roles in the Vietnam War. The bombing role of the F-4 Phantom increased in Vietnam until November 1970 (when the last F-105D Thunderchief was withdrawn from combat), when it became the primary US Air Force tactical ordnance delivery system.
