The M270 MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) was developed to close a very real gap between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces in rocket artillery. U.S. Artillery had been focused purely on cannon as they offered greater accura-cy and precision, but the success of rocket artil-lery during the 1973 Yom Kippur War changed the minds of the senior staff. Jointly developed by the United States, United Kingdom, West Germany, France, and Italy, the system consists of a loader/launcher system mated to the M993 carrier vehicle, which is a variant of the Bradley chassis. The launcher can fire either guided missiles (ATACMS) or 12 rockets in a salvo. MLRS rocket salvoes generate over 7000 bomblets to saturate an area with explosives.
In Israeli Service
First introduced into service with the US Army in 1983, the Israelis have received a supply of these rocket systems from their American Allies.
