Comet Armoured Troop

The A34 Comet was initially supposed to be an upgunned Cromwell, it ended up as a whole new tank. It had thicker armour and a new 77mm gun, while retaining the Cromwell’s speed, low profile, and high-explosive capability. The gun used the same projectiles as the 17 pdr in a reengineered gun that fitted within a smaller space. The result was slightly less powerful than the 17 pdr, but still quite deadly to all but the heaviest German tanks.

Like the Cromwell and Challenger, it took longer in development than hoped, and wasn't ready for service until December 1944. The first division to be equipped with the Comet was the 11th Armoured Division. Unfortunately, its reequipping was interrupted by the Battle of the Bulge, so it wasn't until March 1945 that the Comet entered combat. After that things moved quickly, and the 7th Armoured Division (the famous Desert Rats) was about to be reequipped when the war ended.
