The bulk of panzer regiments in 1942 were equipped with the reliable Panzer III tank. Early versions of the tank gave exceptional service, but were under-armoured when Soviet medium tanks arrived in numbers.
Most tanks in the panzer battalions were the short-barrelled Panzer III. These were more than enough to deal with older Soviet tanks and the lighter lend-lease American vehicles.
As the year went on, more long-barrelled 5cm Panzer IIIs became available. These more powerful guns were needed to deal with the Soviet T-34, which was arriving in increasingly large numbers by late 1942. In addition to the longer 5cm guns, the later model of Panzer III also had improved armour to help it survive against medium calibre Soviet guns.
The 7.5cm gun increased the firepower of the Panzer III against hardened targets such as dug-in infantry.
