As well as the specialist air assault divisions, each Soviet army has its own brigade of helicopter mounted air assault troops. The assault helicopter units are armed with the Mil Mi-24D Hind armoured assault helicopter (called the Krokodil (Crocodile) by its crews). These heavily armed monsters roam the skies above the battlefield targeting enemy units with their four-barrelled 12.7mm YakB Gatling guns, UB-32 57mm rocket pods, and AT-6 or AT-9 Spiral anti-tank guided missiles.
One of the major roles of the air assault brigade is to seize major river and canal crossings ahead of the motor and tank divisions’ advancing forward detachments. The assault helicopter can transport a small squad of troops for this very role. The Hinds saturate the objective with fire, then swoop in and deliver the infantry to hold the position.
