The front right track guard clipped the corner of the building as Clarke steered the Bradley around it and brought the vehicle to an abrupt halt. The rear ramp lowered and Cooper’s squad deployed rapidly, the SAW team occupying the brown brick building while the Dragon team set up using the courtyard wall as cover. A section of low flying air support slammed past overhead, rattling the roof tiles. Bursts of heavy automatic weapons fire could be heard intermittently in the distance.
Cooper pointed towards the burnt wreck of a bus. “Clarke! Use that as cover. Get a sight line down the road for the TOW.”
The Bradley rattled back and shifted into a hull down position. The rest of the platoon were occupying similar positions around the edge of the small village. Russian armour would be approaching from the north-east within minutes and every weapon, every missile would be needed to stop them.
“Target! Engaging!” The TOW missile burst out of the launcher then streaked down range, the gunner keeping the enemy vehicle targeted until impact. The T-72 tank was struck like a giant golf swing connected with it, the turret blown off and tumbling away, while the hull vented fire and smoke in all directions. Return fire from the enemy began to arrive, as more detonations indicated where the rest of the platoon registered vehicle kills.
The Dragon team loosed off a round, then began to frantically reload.
“They’re coming round the right!” yelled Braxton from the upper floor.
The first artillery rounds began to land as the Russians brought more of their weapons into the fight. Time to go — back to the next village.
“Mount up! Mount up!” Cooper waved his arm in a circle. There would be more fighting to come.
