The BMP-1, the world’s first infantry fighting vehicle, shocked the world when it was revealed in 1966. For the first time, infantry would go into battle under armour, in a vehicle capable of operating in a nuclear and chemical environment, with weaponry able to defeat tanks and infantry alike. Mounting a 73mm 2A28 Grom, ‘Thunder’, smooth-bore gun firing antitank rockets and the AT-3 Sagger missile, the BMP-1 revolutionised modern battle doctrine and changed the ways war would be fought.
The BMP-2 was an evolutionary step from the BMP-1. It has a larger turret housing the longer ranged, faster-firing 30mm 2A42 automatic cannon, capable of engaging enemy missile teams and helicopters to protect the BMPs and supporting tanks. The BMP-2 also mounts the modern AT-5 Spandrel missile, named Konkurs (Contest) by the Soviet Army. These elements combine to make the BMP-2 an excellent andoffensive armoured infantry tool.
