The BMD-1 airborne infantry fighting vehicle shares many of the characteristics of the motor rifles’ BMP-1. It is armed with the same 73mm 2A28 “Grom” low-pressure smoothbore shortrecoil semi-automatic gun. It can also fire the same AT-3 Sagger anti-tank guided missile. However, it is much lighter and smaller so it can be secured to a pallet and parachute dropped from aircraft, as well as being airlifted by a heavy helicopter. The engine is located at the back of the BMD-1, so its transported paratroopers have to mount and dismount the vehicle via the roof hatches.

The BMD-2 has an upgraded turret/weapons combination. It is similar to the BMP-2 in the same way the BMD-1 is to the BMP-1. The BMD-2 is armed with the 30mm 2A42 multipurpose autocannon, a 7.62mm PKT coaxial machine-gun, and a pintle-mounted 9P135M-1 anti-tank guided missile launcher firing the AT-5 Spandrel (9M113 Konkurs) missile. Heavy weapons are carried in the BTR-D APC, distinguished by their lack of turret and extra road wheel (six on each side, rather than five on the BMD).
